Position Summary
This role is based at the Mulgrave Operations Centre and involves driving a school bus on Route 181 in Inverness County, currently serving Highway 19 Ceilidh Trail to Bayview Education Centre. The position is part-time (5 hours/day) and runs from 09/01/2026 to 06/30/2027. This position falls under the CUPE Local 955 job classification.
Job Responsibilities
- Operate a school bus in accordance with Nova Scotia safety laws and SRCE policies and procedures
- Perform pre-trip inspections at the beginning of each work day
- Perform pre-trip inspections prior to extra/co-curricular trips
- Complete all transportation-related forms (Hours of Work, Route & Passenger Sheets, Daily Inspection Sheets, etc.)
- Maintain discipline on school buses and follow SRCE policies regarding incidents
- Report all accidents in accordance with SRCE policy and procedure
- Keep the inside and outside of the bus clean according to SRCE standards
- Report mechanical problems to the appropriate designate
- Operate the school bus according to the assigned route plan and schedule
- Attend all Driver In-services provided by SRCE
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Bus Driver Job Requirements
- Minimum Class 2B or 2C license with air brake endorsement
- Proven ability to work effectively with students on the bus (through experience or SRCE-sponsored training)
- High school completion or equivalent experience and training
- Two months of driving experience as a professional school bus driver
- Current First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain before employment
- Current Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certification considered an asset
- Commercial Safety College courses or related safety courses considered an asset
- Successful completion of the SRCE casual bus driver training program, or a recognized professional driver training program
- Current, clear Criminal Record Check–Vulnerable Sector and Child Abuse Registry required prior to employment
