Lost your job in the UAE? Check the 8 MOHRE rules for ILOE unemployment insurance. A simple guide on who can claim, how much you get, and how to apply.
Losing a job is hard. In the UAE, rent and bills do not wait. That is why the government started the unemployment insurance scheme. Many people call it ILOE. It stands for Involuntary Loss of Employment.
But here is the catch. Not everyone who loses a job gets paid. You must meet certain rules set by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
In this post, I will go through all eight rules. I will keep it simple. Read them one by one and check your own case.
What does ILOE pay?
If you qualify, you get 60% of your basic salary. You get it for up to three months. There is also a monthly limit of AED 10,000 or AED 20,000, depending on the plan you chose. DLA Piper explains the limits here.
Important: it is based on your basic salary. It does not include housing, transport or other allowances.
The 8 rules to qualify
1. You must be subscribed for 12 months
You need at least 12 months of subscription in a row. You cannot join after you lose your job and claim the next day. If you are not subscribed yet, do it now. The official site is iloe.ae.
2. You were not fired for disciplinary reasons
The job loss must be involuntary. If your employer dismissed you for a disciplinary reason, you cannot claim. Other types of job loss may still qualify, such as company closure or layoffs.
3. No fraud and no fake employer
Your claim must be true. If you give false information, you will not get paid. The same applies if the employer is proven to be fake.
4. You have not found a new job
This money is for the gap between jobs. If you start a new job while you are getting paid, the payments stop. That is fair. Just make sure you inform the system.
5. You apply within 30 days
This one catches many people. You must submit your claim within 30 days of your job ending. If you have a labour dispute, the 30 days start after the dispute is settled. Do not wait. Set a phone reminder the day you get your cancellation.
6. No active absence complaint against you
If your employer filed a work absence complaint against you, clear it first. Only then can you claim.
7. Your job loss is not due to a strike
The scheme does not cover job loss that comes from strikes or non-peaceful protests. This applies even if you did not cause any damage yourself.
8. You are legally in the UAE
You must hold a valid residency status. The good news is that losing your job does not end your visa that day. After a visa is cancelled or expires, the UAE gives a grace period of 30 to 180 days, depending on your residency type. Make sure you still meet the rules during this time. Khaleej Times explains the grace periods here.
A small mistake that can cost you
Your employer must write the real reason for ending your contract. If your cancellation paper says “resigned” by mistake, your claim can be rejected. This has happened to real workers. Gulf News covered one such case, and MOHRE replied to it.
So check your papers before you leave. Ask HR to fix any error early.
Who does NOT get paid?
In simple words, you will not get compensation if:
- You resigned.
- You were dismissed for disciplinary reasons.
- You left the UAE.
- You joined a new job.
Quick checklist before you apply
- Have I been subscribed for 12 months in a row?
- Is my premium paid up?
- Does my cancellation paper show the correct reason?
- Do I have any absence complaint?
- Is my residency still valid?
- Am I within the 30-day window?
How to apply
Go to the official ILOE website, iloe.ae, and submit your claim there. You can also call the MOHRE call centre on 600590000. Their main website is mohre.gov.ae.

Final words
ILOE will not replace your full salary. But three months of support can give you breathing room. The rules are not hard. Most problems come from late claims, missing subscriptions or wrong paperwork.
So subscribe early. Keep your papers clean. And claim fast.
