Role overview

As an Engineering Manager on the Accounting Core team at Xero, you will lead high-performing, inclusive engineering teams while serving as a technical anchor for your organization. You will balance driving product delivery velocity with maintaining operational excellence, guiding your team through complex technical challenges while championing modern engineering practices.

Key responsibilities

Lead and mentor high-performing engineering teams, fostering an environment built on trust, transparency, and diverse perspectives.
Drive the delivery of software roadmaps predictably while managing complex dependencies in agile environments.
Champion AI-native workflows across the software development lifecycle to improve efficiency and team productivity.
Guide technical modernization efforts by decoupling legacy systems and maintaining strong code quality and system architecture.
Elevate developer experience by identifying and eliminating unnecessary complexity, toil, and brittleness in engineering environments.
Partner closely with Product and Design teams to resolve dependencies early and align on shared business and customer goals.
Scale system health and visibility practices to ensure product status and technical debt are transparent and actionable.

Requirements

Proven track record of delivering software roadmaps in agile environments while managing complex technical dependencies.
Deep understanding of software architecture with demonstrated ability to guide teams through technical modernization initiatives.
Strong passion for coaching, mentoring, and advocating for the career progression and development of engineers.
Leadership approach that emphasizes fast, decentralized decision-making and empowering your team to take ownership.
Ability to lead through influence, building strong partnerships across cross-functional teams including Product and Design.
Bias toward action with the ability to proactively assess work progress and redirect focus when outcomes aren’t aligned with business goals.
