Role overview
Halter is transforming livestock farming through innovative wearable technology and infrastructure that enables farmers to manage grazing operations without traditional fencing, quad bikes, or dogs. As an Experienced Electronics Engineer, you will take full ownership of critical hardware components within Halter’s collar devices, driving design decisions and managing the complete journey from concept through to mass production deployment.
Key responsibilities
- Design, develop, and test highly reliable electronics for animal wearables and associated infrastructure, ensuring performance in demanding real-world farming environments.
- Own end-to-end electronic design including component selection, circuit analysis, simulation, schematic design, PCB layout, prototyping, debugging, comprehensive documentation, manufacturing support, and validation testing.
- Continuously innovate hardware designs to improve reliability and performance while meeting aggressive cost targets and manufacturing constraints.
- Collaborate across firmware, advanced systems, mechanical engineering, production, and farm operations teams to deliver integrated solutions.
- Develop and execute validation plans to verify all critical hardware features and ensure robust field performance.
- Conduct root cause analysis on manufacturing issues and field returns, translating findings into actionable design improvements.
- Apply design principles for manufacturability, testability, and electromagnetic compatibility throughout the development process.
Requirements
- Tertiary qualification in Electronics Engineering or equivalent relevant discipline.
- Minimum 5+ years of professional electronics engineering experience, ideally developed within larger engineering organisations before progressing to autonomous technical leadership roles.
- Demonstrated track record of designing reliable hardware electronics and successfully delivering designs into high-volume mass production, with preference for full product lifecycle ownership experience.
- Proven technical expertise with microcontroller units, system-on-chip devices, inertial sensors, GPS, wireless communication protocols (WiFi, LoRa), and mixed-signal circuit design including operational amplifiers, analog-to-digital converters, switched-mode power supplies, and low-dropout regulators.
- Specialised experience in ultra-low power IoT electronics design, including solar power generation, high-voltage generation and insulation, DC-DC power conversion, and power consumption optimisation strategies.
- Proficiency with electronic engineering tools including SPICE simulation software, oscilloscopes, network analysers, signal generators, component measurement devices, and high-voltage testing equipment.
- Strong organisational, time management, and communication abilities, with capacity to work effectively in a self-directed, high-pressure startup environment.
- For senior, lead, or staff-level candidates: experience mentoring engineering team members, leading design reviews, or owning complete subsystem responsibility.
What makes this role worth considering
You’ll be working with a well-funded team at a company solving genuinely meaningful problems in agricultural sustainability. The role offers substantial technical depth across multiple specialised domains—from ultra-low power design to RF optimisation and solar systems—providing continuous learning opportunities. The position is based in Auckland with expected travel to manufacturing partners in China and Thailand (typically twice quarterly for mid-level roles, reducing to quarterly for senior positions), offering international exposure while maintaining a strong home base.
