Role overview
As a Senior Engineer – Database at Xero, you will work alongside database engineers and product teams to maintain and enhance the reliability, quality, and performance of the company’s core database infrastructure. You will combine technical analysis with modern AI tools to optimise operations across Xero’s database fleet while leading a significant migration initiative from SQL Server to Aurora Postgres.
Key responsibilities
- Manage and optimise day-to-day operations across the SQL Server and SQL Server RDS database fleet.
- Plan and execute comprehensive database migrations from SQL Server to Aurora Postgres RDS.
- Analyse query performance and provide strategic guidance on database design to support product development teams.
- Integrate AI tools into engineering workflows to improve efficiency in query analysis, risk identification, and proactive maintenance.
- Consult with product teams on schema design, query tuning, and database observability using AWS tools.
- Identify database risks early and implement sustainable, scalable solutions for millions of customers.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in SQL Server and SQL Server RDS, with strong proficiency in query analysis and performance tuning.
- Practical experience with or familiarity with Aurora Postgres RDS, along with enthusiasm for contributing to active migration projects.
- Pragmatic approach to technical ownership with the ability to identify risks early and implement sustainable solutions.
- Clear communication skills to translate database complexities for product teams and collaborate effectively across disciplines.
- Curiosity and openness to leveraging AI tools to streamline routine tasks and enhance engineering productivity.
