Role overview

Halter is transforming livestock management through innovative hardware that enables farmers to manage cattle without traditional fencing, bikes, or dogs. As an Experienced Mechanical Engineer in the Hardware team, you will design and develop devices built to operate reliably in the field for 6–10 years, working across the complete product lifecycle from initial concept through production and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

  • Design robust electro-mechanical products that withstand demanding outdoor conditions and maintain functionality 24/7 throughout their operational life.
  • Lead the development of injection-molded components, including complex overmolding designs, and manage relationships with contract manufacturers across China and Thailand to ensure production quality.
  • Conduct verification and validation testing in laboratory and field settings, documenting results to demonstrate product reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with farmers and spend time on farms to understand ergonomic requirements and real-world challenges, ensuring designs address user needs effectively.
  • Optimize designs for manufacturability and assembly, iterating parts and processes to support high-volume production targets.
  • Work with external suppliers to refine designs and streamline manufacturing, including on-site problem-solving at factories during tool commissioning.
  • Contribute to a high-performance team culture by taking ownership of projects, mentoring colleagues, and driving continuous improvement across the mechanical engineering function.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least three years of professional experience developing robust hardware, ideally in automotive, agricultural, military, or similarly demanding industries.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD and 2D drafting, with preference for Solidworks or Onshape.
  • Demonstrated experience designing complex injection-molded parts and managing contract manufacturers through tool commissioning.
  • Strong understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles applied to high-volume production.
  • Willingness to travel 10–20% of the year for supplier engagement and farm visits (negotiable).

What makes this role worth considering

You’ll be part of a mission-driven company backed by tier-one investors, working on hardware that genuinely changes farming practices and improves sustainability. The role offers significant scope for up-skilling, leadership, and career development within a small, agile team where your contributions directly impact the company’s success. Based in Auckland with an office-first culture that values in-person collaboration, you’ll collaborate across a high-performance team committed to solving hard problems that matter.
