Role overview

Halter is building technology to transform how farmers manage grazing operations through a system combining hardware, software, and AI. As a Junior or Intermediate Engineer, you’ll join a team solving complex, real-world problems that span the full technology stack—from the mobile and web interfaces farmers use in the field to the backend systems and infrastructure that power livestock management at scale.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deliver features and systems end-to-end, from the user interfaces farmers interact with to the underlying services and infrastructure supporting them.
  • Make informed architectural decisions and implement them through high-quality code that works reliably in production environments.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, design, and product teams to ship impactful features quickly while maintaining high standards.
  • Support other engineers through design discussions, thorough code reviews, and clear knowledge sharing.
  • Own the reliability and performance of systems your team builds, including participating in on-call rotations.
  • Develop deep domain knowledge by spending time on farms to understand how your work affects real users in challenging field conditions.

Requirements

  • Experience designing and delivering complex systems in production environments, with practical knowledge of what works and what fails at scale.
  • Product-focused engineering mindset where customer experience matters as much as code quality.
  • Proficiency using AI tools to enhance team productivity and focus engineering effort on harder problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to support and collaborate effectively with other engineers in a shared codebase.
  • Comfort working in fast-moving, ambiguous environments where pragmatism and adaptability are valued over perfection.
  • Experience working in cloud environments, with AWS experience as a bonus.
  • For frontend or mobile roles: strong UX instinct, experience with modern frameworks like React or React Native, and attention to performance on real devices.
  • For backend roles: experience building and scaling REST APIs, working with distributed systems and event-driven services, comfort with both relational and non-relational databases, and ideally experience with Node.js, Kotlin, Go, or hardware and IoT integration.
  • For full-stack roles: proficiency across web, mobile, and backend systems spanning the entire stack.
  • For platform roles: passion for building tools that accelerate company-wide engineering velocity, strong AWS and Terraform skills at scale, and experience with CI/CD, observability, and on-call tooling.

What makes this role worth considering

You’ll work on engineering challenges that genuinely haven’t been solved before, combining hardware and software in real-world farm environments rather than controlled lab conditions. The team is backed by tier-one investors including Founders Fund and Bessemer Venture Partners, and operates with a culture that values high performance and meaningful work.
