Role overview

Halter is transforming livestock farming through a system that combines hardware, software, and AI to enable farmers to manage grazing operations more productively and sustainably. We’re seeking Lead Engineers to join our Product & Engineering team in Auckland, where you’ll tackle complex, real-world problems that span hardware integration, mobile and web experiences, and AI-driven decision-making systems.

Key responsibilities

  • Take on the most challenging technical problems and ship solutions that demonstrate deep problem-solving and architectural thinking.
  • Make critical architectural decisions and validate them through implementation, setting the standard for code quality, observability, and maintainability across your domain.
  • Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews, design conversations, and knowledge sharing, helping the team grow through collaboration.
  • Own end-to-end reliability and performance of your services, including participation in on-call rotations and troubleshooting complex issues in production.
  • Improve our testing strategies, CI/CD workflows, and infrastructure patterns to support rapid, sustainable growth.
  • Develop deep domain knowledge by visiting farms and understanding how your work performs in real operating conditions.
  • Lead by example in using AI tools effectively to amplify team output and focus engineering effort on high-impact problems.

Requirements

  • Multiple years of experience shipping complex systems in production, with the practical wisdom and resilience that comes from real-world engineering challenges.
  • Proven ability to think like a product engineer, balancing technical excellence with genuine concern for customer experience and outcomes.
  • Comfort operating in fast-moving, ambiguous environments where adaptability is valued alongside technical precision.
  • Experience working in cloud environments, with AWS experience being particularly valuable.
  • For frontend or mobile roles: strong UX intuition, proficiency with modern frameworks such as React or React Native, and attention to performance and polish on real devices.
  • For backend roles: demonstrated expertise in building and scaling REST APIs, distributed systems, and event-driven services, with familiarity across relational and non-relational databases and languages such as Node.js, Kotlin, or Go.
  • For platform roles: deep experience with AWS and Terraform at scale, including CI/CD, observability, and on-call infrastructure.

What makes this role worth considering

You’ll be working on a genuinely meaningful mission that’s reshaping an entire industry, not just optimizing an existing product. The engineering challenges are substantial and varied—from modeling the physical world accurately in real time to maintaining reliability across constrained hardware and flaky rural connectivity—offering breadth and depth that few roles provide. You’ll be part of a high-performing culture where people are committed to solving hard problems alongside talented colleagues who share that same standard of excellence.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health and wellness support through partnership with Southern Cross Health Insurance.
  • Generous parental leave: six months fully paid for primary caregivers and four weeks for secondary caregivers.
  • Annual personal development budget of $1,000 to support your growth.
  • Unlimited paid annual leave and wellness leave to prioritize rest and recharge.
  • Competitive remuneration package including salary, benefits, and employee stock ownership plan.
  • Snacks and drinks available throughout the day to support your workflow.
