Role overview
Checkout.com powers payments for over one billion global shoppers annually, working behind the scenes for companies like eBay, Spotify, Klarna, Uber, and Sony. As a Manager, Sales Engineering based in London, you will own the technical side of major deals from initial conversation through implementation, bridging the gap between merchant requirements and the platform’s capabilities.
Key responsibilities
- Partner with Account Executives to position Checkout.com’s products, solutions, and services while positioning the platform to prospective merchants.
- Understand merchant technical requirements and map them to APIs and products, creating solution designs and internal documentation.
- Conduct product demonstrations, build custom payment flows, develop proofs of concept, and create tailored presentations for merchant stakeholders.
- Provide technical expertise across payment performance areas including acceptance rates, fraud prevention, tokenisation, and alternative payment methods.
- Lead all technical interactions with merchants from first contact through go-live, working closely with Implementation Engineers during the integration phase.
- Support the BID management team with responses to RFP and RFI requests.
- Gather market and merchant feedback to champion internal product improvements and keep the organisation informed of industry developments.
Requirements
- Minimum two years of experience as a Sales Engineer, Solutions Architect, Pre-Sales Consultant, Implementation Engineer, or Technical Account Manager, ideally at a payment service provider or payments company.
- Demonstrated experience in a technical, client-facing role, with merchant-side payments experience also valued.
- Deep expertise in either payments or technology, with commitment to developing proficiency in the other area.
- For payments strength: understanding of end-to-end payment flows, industry regulations and schemes, and experience with technologies such as 3DS, network tokenisation, Apple/Google Pay, alternative payment methods, Open Banking, or fraud-risk engines.
- For technical strength: coding proficiency and comfort with web technologies, including at least one front-end language (JavaScript, React, Angular) or back-end language (Java, .NET, Python, Node), plus familiarity with REST/JSON API integration and ability to diagnose issues using logs and API responses.
- Strong written and verbal English with the ability to communicate effectively across developers, product teams, payments specialists, finance professionals, and senior stakeholders.
- Commercial mindset with focus on revenue, volume, and pricing; highly organised with ability to manage shifting priorities.
