Role overview

Checkout.com processes over 10 billion transactions yearly for more than one billion global shoppers, powering payments for companies like eBay, Spotify, Klarna, Uber, and Sony. As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will own critical cloud infrastructure that underpins this global payments platform, working within an established, fast-moving team that treats infrastructure entirely as software.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the design and delivery of large-scale platform projects from architecture through Terraform to production, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and cost-optimised.
  • Design platform primitives and foundational services that product teams across Checkout.com build upon, making the secure approach also the easy approach.
  • Work with Engineering Managers and architects to refine requirements, shape technical direction, and document significant decisions as architecture decision records.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for team-owned services, providing advanced operational support and ensuring high availability across global payment systems.
  • Produce exemplary code and documentation that spreads best practices and standards throughout your group and across the organisation.
  • Navigate technical dependencies within and outside your pillar to optimise for both delivery speed and business outcomes.
  • Act as a cornerstone resource during incident resolution and root-cause analysis.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of cloud engineering experience with significant, hands-on AWS depth, including multi-account architectures, IAM, KMS, and core compute, storage, and security services at enterprise scale.
  • Proven production experience with Azure alongside AWS, including landing zones, VNet architectures, Entra ID, and understanding of how the two cloud platforms differ.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Terraform, writing reusable modules, managing secure state, and following Git-based workflows with CI/CD practices.
  • Strong cloud networking expertise including VPC and VNet design, hub-and-spoke architectures, DNS, private connectivity, and routing knowledge to resolve connectivity issues independently.
  • Solid experience running containerised workloads in production on Kubernetes, specifically EKS or AKS, including cluster lifecycle and operational scaling.
  • Experience operating in regulated environments with familiarity of change control, least privilege principles, auditability, and PCI DSS compliance.
  • Ability to mentor peers, translate ambiguous problems into actionable technical plans, and demonstrate pragmatic judgment about when to move fast versus building for longevity.

What makes this role worth considering

You will join Checkout.com’s Cloud Platform team, which genuinely operates a multi-cloud estate and owns the foundational infrastructure that global payment processing depends on. The role offers the opportunity to work at scale on mission-critical systems serving over one billion shoppers, with a team that values software engineering excellence and treats every deployment as reviewed, version-controlled code rather than manual configuration.
