Role overview

As a Senior Engineer at Xero, you will tackle large-scale engineering challenges that go beyond feature delivery to shape the architecture and reliability of systems serving millions of users globally. You will work on modernizing complex platforms while mentoring fellow engineers and driving technical excellence across the organization.

Key responsibilities

Refactor monolithic systems into distributed, scalable architectures that support high-availability environments.
Make major code design decisions independently and contribute to global engineering standards that guide the team’s technical direction.
Enhance developer experience by advancing CI/CD tooling, test-driven development practices, and engineering maturity.
Build and maintain systems across a diverse technology stack including C#, .Net, React, AWS, and Kubernetes.
Design and implement technical solutions that align with long-term engineering frameworks and platform goals.
Mentor and coach other engineers through complex technical challenges, helping them develop their skills and grow within the organization.
Participate actively in code reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions to maintain high standards of technical craft.

Requirements

Proven experience delivering and operating complex, large-scale systems in distributed or high-availability environments with strong foundational knowledge.
Demonstrated ability to design and build high-quality software using a range of languages and tools, with the capacity to learn adjacent technologies quickly.
Experience leading major code design decisions and contributing to broader technical solutions within your team.
Proficiency with modern engineering practices such as automated testing, refactoring, and agile delivery methodologies.
Strong mentoring abilities and a genuine commitment to helping other engineers grow their technical capabilities.

This position is based in Vancouver with a hybrid working model, offering flexibility to work from home while joining the team for one to two boost days per week for in-person collaboration.
