Role overview
You’ll join a small team within Engineering Experience that builds internal platforms and tools to help engineers across Xero work effectively with AI. This is an end-to-end ownership role where you’ll shepherd projects from early experimentation through production, including establishing runbooks, monitoring and rollback strategies that keep systems reliable as other engineers depend on them day to day.
Key responsibilities
- Build and maintain an internal skills marketplace and distribution platform for AI tools used across Xero’s engineering organization.
- Develop guidance and establish best practices for authoring agent skills, including agents designed for remediation tasks.
- Collaborate directly with vendors including AWS, Microsoft and GitHub on early-access technology not yet available publicly.
- Help shape the technical direction of AI-related platforms and influence how the wider engineering team adopts AI tools.
- Own the reliability and operational aspects of systems you build, including writing runbooks, setting up monitoring and planning for rollbacks.
- Guide and support a team that is early in its AI journey, challenging technical decisions and helping teammates develop structured, quality-focused approaches.
Requirements
- Hands-on software engineering experience, ideally with C#, .NET and AWS, though strong engineers from other backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated experience building internal tools or platforms that other engineers genuinely relied on.
- Strong production discipline with the ability to write runbooks, establish monitoring and think through rollback strategies before deployment.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to bring people along with ideas, not simply shipping code without input or collaboration.
- Genuine curiosity about coding agents, AI-native tools and where AI engineering is headed.
- Ability to challenge decisions directly and respectfully while maintaining a structured, quality-focused approach to learning new technologies.
What makes this role worth considering
You’ll work with a close-knit team spread across Australian locations and New Zealand with genuine collaborative practices across time zones. The role offers real influence over how an entire engineering organization adopts AI, including direct partnerships with major technology vendors on unreleased products. You’ll have flexibility to work hybrid with regular in-person collaboration days, and can be based anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
