Role overview

As a Senior Software Engineer, Backend on the Growth Foundations team, you will build and scale core infrastructure powering growth initiatives across Coinbase’s consumer and business platforms. This role focuses on designing backend systems that support notifications at scale, incentives and referral platforms, user targeting and segmentation, lifecycle communications, and ML ranking that impact more than 50% of Coinbase web and app surfaces.

Key responsibilities

Design and deliver scalable distributed backend services that meet high throughput, low latency, and high reliability requirements for growth infrastructure.
Architect resilient service-oriented systems using modern cloud technologies, contributing across backend, data, and machine learning layers.
Partner with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate product vision and technical strategy into quarterly roadmaps.
Lead investments in developer tooling, shared platform capabilities, and cross-team relationships that improve organizational velocity.
Build production code that prioritizes security, reliability, and maintainability at scale with comprehensive testing.
Drive rapid experimentation by building and iterating on growth features that deliver measurable improvements to user acquisition and retention.

Requirements

At least 5 years of professional experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production backend services in distributed environments.
Expertise in server-side architecture including performance optimization, security, scalability, and containerized environments such as AWS, Kubernetes, and Docker.
Proven ability to design and execute growth experiments or A/B tests, using data to identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities.
Experience integrating with databases, caching layers, and storage solutions including Postgres, MongoDB, and DynamoDB in high-throughput systems.
Track record collaborating cross-functionally with product and engineering teams to deliver complete solutions from scoping through production monitoring in fast-moving environments.
Ability to use generative AI responsibly while maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
