Role overview

Coinbase is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for its Risk Engineering team within the Consumer & Business group. In this role, you will design and build systems that detect and prevent fraud, manage risk exposure, and safeguard millions of users from financial threats in real time. You’ll provide technical leadership on end-to-end projects and make architectural decisions that shape how the platform identifies and mitigates risk at cryptocurrency scale.

Key responsibilities

Lead the complete design and delivery of complex risk platform features, including architecture, implementation, deployment, and monitoring with strict performance and reliability standards.
Drive architectural decisions for Coinbase’s risk detection and mitigation systems by translating business requirements into scalable, production-ready designs that balance fraud prevention with user experience.
Collaborate across Data Science, ML, Risk Analysts, Product, and Compliance teams to develop both proactive systems such as real-time decisioning engines and reactive solutions including incident response tools.
Build AI-native risk systems that use agent fleets to automate complex detection and response workflows, reducing manual intervention.
Mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, author technical design documents, and establish engineering best practices throughout the codebase.
Ensure system quality and operational excellence by managing technical debt, overseeing bug triage, and leading incident response and post-mortem processes.

Requirements

At least five years of backend software engineering experience with a demonstrated record of delivering complex, production-grade systems.
Deep proficiency in backend languages including Go, Ruby, Python, or Java, with proven experience designing distributed systems, microservices architectures, event-driven systems, and REST or GraphQL APIs.
Ability to convert ambiguous requirements into clear technical plans and working architectures, ensuring alignment across engineering, product, and data science teams.
Track record of leading end-to-end projects with lasting impact, encompassing scoping, design, implementation, monitoring, and mentoring of other engineers.
Experience managing incident response, conducting post-mortems, and implementing measurable operational improvements in high-availability systems.
Capability to use generative AI responsibly, maintaining appropriate human oversight to produce business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in efficiency, cost, and quality.
