Senior Software Engineer – Product & Engineering
Role overview
Halter is building technology that transforms how farmers manage grazing operations through hardware, software, and AI systems deployed on real farms. As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll design and deliver complex features across the full stack, from the mobile and web interfaces farmers use to the backend services and infrastructure supporting them. You’ll work on genuine technical challenges that haven’t been solved before, shipping software that must perform reliably in paddocks, not just controlled environments.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build, and deliver features and systems end to end, from farmer-facing interfaces to the services and infrastructure powering them.
- Make architectural decisions and implement them through writing production code that demonstrates both technical rigor and product thinking.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, design, and product teams to ship high-impact features at pace.
- Support and mentor other engineers through code reviews, design conversations, and thoughtful context sharing.
- Own system reliability and performance as part of end-to-end service ownership, including participation in on-call rotations.
- Develop deep domain knowledge by getting out on farms to understand the real-world constraints and needs of your work.
- Leverage AI tools effectively to amplify team productivity and focus on harder problems.
Requirements
- Proven experience designing and delivering complex systems in production environments.
- Product engineering mindset: you care about customer experience and can balance thoughtful code with shipping speed.
- Demonstrated experience supporting and mentoring other engineers.
- Comfort working in fast-moving, ambiguous environments where adaptability matters more than perfection.
- Experience working in cloud environments, with AWS experience as a bonus.
- Depending on your focus area: strong UX intuition and modern frontend frameworks for frontend roles; experience building and scaling REST APIs and distributed systems for backend roles; or cloud infrastructure expertise with AWS and Terraform at scale for platform roles.
- A degree in software engineering or equivalent professional experience is valued but not required.
What makes this role worth considering
You’ll be part of a mission-driven team working on problems that genuinely matter—helping farmers operate more productively and sustainably. The engineering work is distinctive because your code must handle real-world constraints: flaky rural connectivity, hardware limitations, and the physical messiness of working with animals and land. Halter maintains an office-first culture focused on in-person collaboration and connection, with benefits including health insurance partnership, unlimited paid annual leave, wellness leave, generous parental leave options, and an annual self-development budget.
