About the Social Studies Teacher Role
- Embody and promote the ethos and standards of excellence outlined in the GEMS Core Values.
- Deliver the required curriculum, with a particular focus on UAE Social Studies, demonstrating accurate and current subject knowledge.
- Plan and deliver engaging, high-quality lessons that motivate students, using appropriate materials and classroom setups to accommodate diverse learning styles.
- Provide written evidence of lesson planning and preparation when requested, and maintain accurate records covering curriculum plans, attendance, teaching resources, and assessment schedules.
- Ensure full compliance with GEMS policies, procedures, and codes of conduct at all times, including Child Protection guidelines.
- Adapt teaching strategies to meet the individual needs of students, including late-entering students, ESL learners, those with lower academic ability, and gifted and talented students.
- Set, mark, and assess student work; track academic progress and attainment, using assessment data to ensure the curriculum meets individual student needs.
- Demonstrate confident use of media and technology within classroom instruction.
- Support students’ overall progress and well-being, offering guidance on both educational and pastoral matters.
- Liaise with external parties when appropriate, such as Ministry of Education officials.
- Actively participate in appraisal and performance management processes, and take ownership of your own professional development.
- Collaborate with colleagues in developing teaching materials, resources, courses of study, and pastoral arrangements.
- Take part in—and lead where appropriate—co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, contributing a minimum of 2 hours per week. Foster strong working relationships through active leadership and open sharing of ideas and resources.
- Monitor and manage student behavior, implementing strategies that encourage self-discipline and address disruptive conduct.
- Model and encourage cultural awareness and understanding, while fostering a genuine love of learning among students.
- Support the planning and organization of school events, such as inter-house competitions, concerts, school productions, and prize-giving ceremonies.
- Maintain regular communication with parents, promoting the GEMS philosophy and core values, and keeping them informed of their child’s progress while respecting confidentiality.
- Show initiative and willingness to go beyond standard working hours when tasks require additional commitment.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
- Carry out other duties as assigned by direct and dotted-line reporting managers or supervisors.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education (B.Ed) or a subject-related degree paired with a recognized teaching qualification (PGCE/PGDE/state teaching license or equivalent).
- Demonstrated experience teaching Social Studies, ideally within a British curriculum framework (preferred but not mandatory).
- Proven ability to inspire, motivate, and support students through engaging and purposeful learning experiences.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative and reflective teaching approach.
- Genuine commitment to continuous professional development and contributing positively to an inclusive school culture.
