Staff, Fraud Risk Strategy
Role overview
Wealthsimple is Canada’s leading financial technology company serving over 4 million Canadians with managed investing, trading, cryptocurrency, tax filing, and spending products. In this Staff-level individual contributor role on the Fraud Countermeasures team within Data Science, you will own the fraud prevention strategy for Wealthsimple’s card products, working independently with manager-level impact while leading through expertise rather than managing direct reports.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and execute fraud strategy across application, transaction, and account takeover fraud for the company’s card products.
- Manage the card fraud loss budget as transaction volumes grow and defend against fraud attacks that could exceed budgeted losses.
- Design, backtest, deploy and refine detection rules, and calibrate decision thresholds on machine learning risk scores.
- Analyze trade-offs between fraud losses prevented, operational costs, and customer experience to recommend the best approach for each situation.
- Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to implement controls that prevent fraud while minimizing friction for legitimate users, such as step-up authentication alternatives to outright declines.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to data scientists and analytics developers within your pod on strategy, rule building and problem-solving approaches.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of fraud prevention experience, with a minimum of 3 years directly managing card fraud prevention at an issuer, fintech company, or payments platform.
- Proven hands-on ownership of card fraud strategy covering application, transaction, and account takeover fraud types.
- Advanced SQL proficiency to write complex queries independently against transaction-level data.
- Demonstrated track record designing, backtesting, shipping and tuning fraud rules with ability to communicate precision, catch rate and approval rate impact.
- Experience quantifying fraud prevention savings relative to operational and customer experience costs to make clear recommendations.
- Practical experience using AI tools in daily work with concrete examples of how they improved your output.
- Ability to influence stakeholders across Product, Engineering, credit risk, operations and external vendors without direct authority, plus strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
