Role overview
Coinbase is seeking an Embedded Engineer for Compliance within the Office of the CTO. This is a founding engineer position focused on identifying and building AI-driven automation solutions across the Compliance organization, which manages regulatory obligations spanning transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, regulatory change management, and exam readiness across more than 60 global entities.
Key responsibilities
- Work directly with Compliance leadership and frontline teams to identify high-value automation opportunities in workflows including transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, regulatory change management, and exam preparation.
- Develop and rapidly prototype solutions using Coinbase’s existing AI platform, defaulting to the company’s infrastructure before recommending building new systems.
- Own the Compliance automation roadmap in collaboration with the Chief Compliance Officer, translating complex regulatory workflows into clear engineering requirements and communicating engineering constraints back to stakeholders.
- Define and execute the build-versus-buy strategy for Compliance tools, determining what should be built internally, adopted from partner teams, procured from external vendors, or discontinued.
- Design automated compliance outputs with auditability, approval gates, evidence retention, and human-in-the-loop controls as core design principles to ensure all outputs remain traceable, reviewable, and defensible to regulators.
- Drive adoption of new tools through education sessions, prototype demonstrations, and feedback loops that engage Compliance teams throughout the implementation journey.
Requirements
- At least five years of software engineering experience with a track record of shipping production systems in complex, stakeholder-heavy environments, with greenfield project experience strongly preferred.
- Hands-on experience deploying large language model applications, including practical knowledge of prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, hallucination safeguards, and human-in-the-loop design for high-stakes compliance use cases.
- Demonstrated ability to partner with non-technical domain experts, quickly understand intricate workflows, and translate those workflows into engineering requirements.
- Familiarity with compliance and regulatory system concepts such as transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, regulatory filing workflows, case management, and audit-ready data handling.
- Understanding of multi-agent orchestration concepts, including how agent systems manage handoffs, escalation paths, and auditability.
- Prior experience in Forward Deployed Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or an embedded technical advisory role, ideally within compliance technology, RegTech, or financial services.
- Ability to use generative AI responsibly while maintaining human oversight to ensure business-ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
