Role overview

Coinbase is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer for the Office of the CTO to embed within the Finance organization and drive AI-powered automation across financial planning, analysis, and treasury operations. This role bridges engineering and finance, helping identify high-impact automation opportunities and building solutions that measurably improve financial workflows across 60+ global subsidiaries.

Key responsibilities

Work directly with FP&A and Treasury leadership to identify and prioritize automation opportunities in workflows such as period-end close, variance analysis, and liquidity stress-testing.
Prototype solutions rapidly using Coinbase’s existing AI platform, moving from ground-level workflow understanding to functional prototypes before recommending new builds.
Own the Finance automation roadmap in partnership with the VP of FP&A & Treasury, translating complex financial workflows into clear engineering requirements and communicating constraints back to stakeholders.
Define build-versus-buy strategy for Finance tooling by evaluating whether capabilities should be built internally, adopted from partner teams, procured from vendors, or retired.
Design automated financial systems with auditability, traceability, and human review as core requirements, ensuring SOX compliance and proper segregation of duties from the start.
Drive adoption of new tools and processes through training sessions, prototype walkthroughs, and feedback loops that bring Finance teams along on the automation journey.

Requirements

Five or more years of software engineering experience with a track record of shipping production systems in complex, stakeholder-driven environments, with greenfield project experience preferred.
Hands-on experience deploying LLM-based applications, including prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, hallucination guardrails, and human-in-the-loop design for sensitive financial outputs.
Demonstrated ability to embed with non-technical domain experts, quickly learn complex workflows, and translate them into actionable engineering requirements.
Familiarity with financial systems concepts including ERP data flows, reconciliation logic, trial balances, and SOX-controlled environments; CPA certification is not required but willingness to learn is expected.
Knowledge of multi-agent orchestration concepts, including how agent systems manage handoffs, escalation paths, and maintain auditability.
Prior experience in Forward Deployed Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or embedded technical advisory roles, ideally within fintech, finance technology, or enterprise automation sectors.
