Role overview

Coinbase is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer Intern to join the HR Technology team within People Success for a 12-week summer 2027 internship. You will own a scoped project end-to-end, building internal applications and AI-powered workflows that help employees work more efficiently. This role offers the chance to take solutions from prototype to production while making meaningful improvements to how Coinbase operates internally.

Key responsibilities

Own a complete project lifecycle from problem discovery and stakeholder collaboration through design, development, testing, and production deployment within the internship timeframe.
Build custom applications, integrations, and AI-powered workflows that replace manual HR processes and enhance the employee experience, ensuring quality checks and appropriate human oversight throughout.
Make technical decisions across data modeling, API integrations, application logic, and user interfaces while balancing speed, maintainability, and security requirements.
Work directly with internal HR stakeholders to understand their needs, map user journeys, and adjust your priorities based on expected business impact.
Define success metrics, collect user feedback, and track outcomes such as time saved, error reduction, and adoption rates to inform iterations and demonstrate impact.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in a degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent hands-on engineering experience outside of formal education.
Demonstrated track record of building, testing, debugging, and shipping software through academic projects, hackathons, or prior internships, with the ability to explain your technical decisions.
Hands-on experience creating AI-powered prototypes or workflows using tools such as large language models, including skills in validating outputs, protecting sensitive data, and identifying when human review is necessary.
Proven ability to take a scoped project to completion by breaking down ambiguous requirements into clear milestones, communicating trade-offs to both technical and non-technical partners, and meeting deadlines.
Experience using generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to produce business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
