Role overview

UniversalAGI is developing AI foundation models that learn physics directly from data to transform how engineers simulate complex systems like reservoirs, aircraft, and medical devices. As a Reservoir Simulation Engineer, you will build and run large-scale reservoir simulation studies to generate the high-fidelity training data that powers these next-generation physics models, working directly with the founding team to shape a product that addresses real pain points in subsurface engineering.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and execute reservoir simulation studies using blackoil and compositional models across conventional and unconventional reservoirs at scale.
  • Develop creative approaches to construct reservoir models and systematically simulate hundreds or thousands of variants, building data pipelines that train the foundation models.
  • Collaborate directly with the AI research team on technical problems that bridge traditional reservoir simulation and machine learning, translating between engineering and AI disciplines.
  • Partner with clients to solve their subsurface challenges, define benchmark datasets and validation criteria, and demonstrate that AI models match or exceed traditional simulation accuracy.
  • Guide product development by sharing expertise on PVT behavior, relative permeability, history matching, uncertainty quantification, hydraulic fracturing, and production-decline analysis.
  • Lead technical conversations with customers and internal teams, communicating complex reservoir engineering concepts to audiences with varying technical backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Three to five or more years of hands-on industry experience building and running reservoir simulation models, including model construction, history matching, forecasting, and field development optimization for both conventional and unconventional reservoirs.
  • Expert proficiency with reservoir simulation software such as Eclipse, Intersect, CMG, OPM Flow, or equivalent tools for blackoil and compositional workflows.
  • Deep knowledge of reservoir engineering fundamentals including PVT behavior, relative permeability, capillary pressure, well modeling, material balance, and history matching.
  • Solid understanding of the static-to-dynamic model workflow, including geologic and geocellular model construction, upscaling, and grid generation.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate between customer needs, engineering requirements, and research objectives.
  • Demonstrated execution velocity, creativity, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail in technical work.
  • Comfort working in high-intensity, fast-paced startup environments where priorities and scope evolve rapidly.

What makes this role worth considering

You will work directly with a founding team backed by prominent investors and advisors, including the former Google CEO and a Turing Award winner, in a 25-person research and engineering organization. The role offers the rare opportunity to apply your entire career of reservoir engineering expertise to fundamentally reshape how physics simulation works across industry, while working on problems that major industrial and defense organizations are already deploying in production environments.
