Role overview

WHOOP is building wearable technology that helps people understand their bodies and optimize performance. The Connectivity Software Team is responsible for the critical communication layer between WHOOP’s hardware devices, the iOS app, and the cloud infrastructure. As a Staff iOS Engineer on this team, you will design and implement the software that enables seamless, reliable connectivity between wearable sensors and mobile devices while managing continuous data streams from athletes and fitness enthusiasts worldwide.

Key responsibilities

Architect, design, implement, and maintain iOS application components that interface with WHOOP hardware using Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, and other communication protocols.
Define and evolve the iOS software architecture and communication protocols while maintaining comprehensive documentation and driving consistency between iOS and Android implementations.
Drive improvements to performance, power efficiency, and reliability across the connectivity software layer, including background and system-level iOS services to enable reliable device connectivity and data synchronization.
Champion strong software architectural principles for testable, scalable, and maintainable code both on your team and across the organization.
Own and maintain a prioritized backlog focused on code health, technical debt reduction, and testability improvements.
Raise engineering standards through code review, increased test coverage, and improved design practices while holding teammates accountable to high standards.
Represent the Connectivity iOS team in cross-functional settings including bug triage, product syncs, firmware coordination, and participate in the full app release process from building and signing through App Store submission.

Requirements

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
Five or more years of professional iOS software engineering experience with strong proficiency in Swift, iOS system APIs, concurrency, and memory management.
Hands-on experience with Combine and background task processing for non-UI iOS features.
Demonstrated ability to influence other engineers in applying architectural and platform-based software design principles to build scalable, modular, and testable software.
Experience debugging and diagnosing issues across complex or distributed systems such as firmware, mobile, and backend environments is strongly preferred.
Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the ability to drive cross-functional problem solving and optimization.
Strong commitment to using AI tools effectively in daily work while maintaining high quality standards.
