Role overview

Vend, part of Lightspeed, is seeking a Staff Site Reliability Engineer to join the Platform team in Auckland. You’ll shape how the company builds and operates reliable systems at scale, working with AWS infrastructure and platform engineering to enable product teams to ship and operate products effectively.

Key responsibilities

  • Define and refine the company’s approach to infrastructure reliability, developer experience and platform capabilities.
  • Design and maintain scalable AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code tools and practices.
  • Build tools and platform services that enable product engineers to deploy and operate systems with independence.
  • Work with engineering teams to architect systems that are resilient, secure and cost-effective.
  • Enhance engineering practices and delivery processes across distributed, cross-functional teams.
  • Lead incident response efforts, drive lasting improvements and mentor other engineers in reliability practices.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and champion observability, high availability and disaster recovery practices.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience operating highly available, scalable production systems on AWS.
  • Background working in a SaaS or product-led environment with cross-functional teams and changing priorities.
  • Strong Infrastructure as Code experience, specifically with Terraform and configuration management tools.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, ECS and Linux systems administration.
  • Coding ability in Python, Ruby or Go, alongside proficiency in complex shell scripting.
  • Experience with observability, incident management, disaster recovery and security practices; familiarity with datastores including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis or DynamoDB and cloud cost optimization.
  • Understanding of Agile methodologies, continuous delivery and testing practices, with strong communication and prioritisation skills.

What makes this role worth considering

You’ll enjoy significant autonomy to tackle complex technical problems and influence technical direction across teams. The role spans broad infrastructure, reliability and platform challenges rather than narrowing focus to a single domain, offering opportunity to grow expertise while making meaningful impact on high-traffic products serving a global user base.

The company offers a hybrid workplace model with flexibility to work remotely from anywhere globally for up to 60 days per year, an unlimited paid time off policy, health and wellness benefits including a $500 annual allowance, mental health support services, paid parental leave, subsidised public transport covering 75% of commuting costs, and a dog-friendly office in Newmarket featuring complimentary meals and fresh provisions. Additional benefits include a Lightspeed share scheme, paid volunteer days and regular team events.
