Role overview
The Exploration Company is building spacecraft for humanity, and this role offers the opportunity to design, manufacture, test, and deliver flight mechanisms for the Nyx spacecraft entirely in-house. As a Mechanism Engineer, you will take ownership of mechanisms from initial concept through flight certification, working across the full design lifecycle.
Key responsibilities
- Participate in all stages of flight mechanism design, from conceptualization and trade studies through detailed design, analysis, testing, and final delivery.
- Create component, assembly, and interface designs along with associated drawings and technical documentation, while managing change requests for released design products.
- Perform hand calculations and finite element analysis to develop, assess, and optimize designs, including structural, kinematic, torque, and force analyses.
- Develop and execute comprehensive test plans and procedures, managing planning, execution, data reduction, and analysis activities.
- Participate in design reviews with internal teams, external suppliers, and customers to ensure design integrity and compliance.
- Prepare technical reports and documentation for both internal stakeholders and external parties.
- Take full ownership of certification work and collaborate with a multidisciplinary engineering team to prepare mechanisms for flight certification.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum three years of experience designing mechanisms within the aerospace industry.
- Strong foundation in mechanical design principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency with CAD software, specifically NX (Siemens), for three-dimensional modeling and simulation.
- Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and change release processes.
- Understanding of the space environment, including vacuum, radiation, and extreme temperature effects on mechanism performance.
- Demonstrated experience performing kinematic, torque, and force calculations, combined with systems engineering thinking and familiarity with industry standards for space mechanisms.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and capability to work effectively across all business levels.
What makes this role worth considering
The Exploration Company operates with an agile mindset, making decisions quickly while maintaining focus on goals and systems. The team values open collaboration, transparency about risks and obstacles, and prioritizes working together to overcome challenges. You will be part of an organization democratizing space access—a rare and compelling opportunity to contribute to transforming the global space industry.
