Role overview

Analog is building infrastructure that connects humans, cities, and technology through reliable data movement between cloud systems and physical devices operating at the edge. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own the architectural decisions that enable data to flow seamlessly across cloud and edge environments, often over unreliable networks where always-on connectivity cannot be assumed. This is a full-time position based in Abu Dhabi within a flat, fast-scaling engineering team.

Key responsibilities

Design and architect backend systems that reliably move data between cloud infrastructure and edge devices across multiple network protocols, with built-in failure tolerance and recovery mechanisms.
Make core technical decisions on containerization strategies and cloud-to-edge deployment patterns for systems that must remain functional when network connectivity is degraded or unavailable.
Work directly with engineers building the physical and product components to understand and define backend architecture requirements, often before specifications are fully formalized.
Diagnose and resolve complex production issues affecting latency, connection stability, and data consistency across unreliable network links, addressing root causes rather than applying temporary fixes.
Establish and raise the technical standard across the backend team as the organization scales, demonstrating best practices through your own work and decision-making.

Requirements

Minimum seven years of backend engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of large-scale production systems from design through deployment and operation.
Fluent expertise in at least two of Java, Python, or Kotlin, with the ability to reason across multiple programming languages and make sound technology choices.
Proven experience driving system design and architectural decisions yourself, including navigating tradeoffs and defending decisions, rather than executing designs created by others.
Hands-on experience with cloud services, edge compute environments, and moving data reliably across multiple network protocols in production settings.
Strong background with containerized development practices and cloud-to-edge deployment patterns specific to distributed, partially-connected systems.
Comfort operating effectively in ambiguous situations and making decisions independently without relying on a large support structure or formal escalation processes.
